About the Data
Each year Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society sponsors a bird count in the Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.
Recently, I have participated in these counts and was interested in what population numbers can tell us.
From the years of 1981 to 2023, an average of 19929 individual birds consisting of an average of 147 species
were seen each year. As a start, we are working on graphically representing population data then hope to make
connections with land usage in the Bay Area (eg: if land usage along the shore of the bay has increased, how
has the population of shore and non shore birds been affected). The data has been compiled by the Summer
Bird Count Coordinator, Bill Bousman.
